The New York Pharma Forum is a non-profit organization, founded in 1990. Our 85 member companies come together to examine and discuss issues that impact the global pharmaceutical industry, with a focus on Japan. This goal is carried out through monthly programs bringing together opinion leaders, government officials, and industry peers to discuss cutting edge issues in the business, policy, and technology arenas.
The international pharmaceutical and biotech industries are coping with ever-rising costs for research and development, coupled with increasing governmental and social pressures to keep prices down. These economic issues are driving industry consolidation around the world – even in Japan, where mergers and acquisitions do not have a long tradition in business life.
All around the world, our member companies are fighting the battle for intellectual property protection. Our industry’s continued progress and world health depend on winning this battle so we can continue to spend the breathtaking amounts needed for new drug discovery. At the same time, we are engaged in a frustrating but nevertheless important struggle to educate the public about our need for patent protection and the high costs of R&D.
These are just some of the challenges our companies face, no matter where our headquarters may be located. But the opportunities that lie ahead for us are exciting indeed. New doors open every day to scientific discoveries that can both prolong and improve quality of life. Over 20 percent of the new drugs launched worldwide each year are derived from biotechnology. The scientific advances currently underway will surely drive this percentage even higher in the next few years. We all hope the result will be many more innovative products to improve the quality of lives and help pay our future R&D bills.
New York Pharma Forum plays an important role in giving its members a chance not only to keep up with the latest industry developments, but even more importantly to digest and discuss them with industry leaders in order to better understand the implications of these changes.
