Part 1: Searching for Cures for Aging
Laura Deming
Partner, The Longevity Fund

When she was 8, Laura Deming realized that we were all going to die of a disease called aging. Ever since, her driving passion has been to slow aging and eliminate age-related disease. She started working in a biogerontology lab when she was 12, and was admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge when she was 14. At 17, she was one of the youngest “20under20” fellows awarded $100,000 by Peter Thiel (venture capitalist and hedge fund manager) to pursue her venture full time.

Ms. Deming is currently a full-time partner at The Longevity Fund, a specialty life science venture capital firm she founded, focused on pharmaceutical companies developing therapies for aging-associated pathology. The fund backs companies with early-stage therapies that target the aging process to treat late-onset medical conditions. Ms. Deming was scheduled to speak at the NYPF General Assembly last December but was unable to come at the last minute. She will discuss the business and financial challenges of fighting age-related diseases, including the prospect for venture-funding in this area.
